Wisconsin Veterinary Referral Center
Is your dog showing signs of arthritis? Learn about a fully-funded clinical trial testing a new therapeutic vaccine for OA pain.
Approximately 20% of dogs over the age of one will be diagnosed with arthritis. WVRC Waukesha is partnering with veterinary teams to enroll patients in a randomized, double-blinded, placebo-controlled clinical study evaluating a new vaccine therapy that targets receptors involved in osteoarthritis (OA) pain. Participation gives your dog access to an investigational treatment and helps improve care for other dogs living with OA.
Why consider joining this study?
Access to an experimental therapy aimed at reducing OA-associated pain.
All study-related visits, diagnostics, and treatments are fully covered.
Randomized, double-blinded, placebo-controlled design to ensure rigorous evaluation.
Incentives available for eligible patient referrals and client participation.
Contribute to research that could change how canine OA pain is treated.
Who is eligible?
Inclusion (basic):
Dogs 8 months of age or older.
Signs of osteoarthritis such as limping, lameness, or other pain-related symptoms.
Stable pain and lameness for ≥ 3 months and radiographically confirmed osteoarthritis.
Patients that have been treated with Librela at any time are not eligible.
Exclusion (examples):
Lameness not caused by osteoarthritis (conditions that affect gait or mobility).
Other medical issues that would interfere with safety or assessment, as determined by the study investigator.
If you’re unsure whether your dog meets these criteria, your veterinarian will review your dog’s history and imaging to determine eligibility.
What participation involves

Full diagnostics at enrollment and follow-up diagnostics as needed during the study.
Monitoring, assessments, and treatment administration by the study team.
All study-related care is provided at no cost to participants.
Your veterinarian will explain the study in detail, answer questions about risks and benefits, and help decide whether participation is the right option for you and your dog.
Frequently asked questions (short)
Is the treatment guaranteed to help my dog? No. This is an investigational therapy being evaluated for safety and effectiveness. The study is randomized and placebo-controlled, so outcomes are not guaranteed.
Will I have to pay for anything? All study-related visits, diagnostics, and treatments are covered by the study. Ask your veterinarian about any other details related to participation or incentives.
How long will the study last? Participants will attend 15 visits; your veterinarian will review the full schedule and expected timeline.
